Kibbitznest Liberal Arts Discussions are a collaboration with The University of Chicago Graham School to host presentations and discussions of original research.

About the Discussion:

What is a human right? We all know the specific rights: life, liberty, due-process, health care, education, and the rest. But really, what is a right? Who guarantees it? And how do we come to possess them, anyway? Our politics is dominated by rights-talk, and my talk will argue that this is to our detriment. There is something about political life that "rights" can't capture. I will sketch a brief history of the development of human rights, offer alternative ways of thinking about politics, and judge the costs and benefits of each.
